REGION OVERVIEW
Splintered Coast is a region consisting of sea and islands, ruled by the pirate King Annie O'Hara. Piracy and crime is the order of the day, with pirates looting any travelers brave or stupid enough to enter the region. The capital lies on the pirate haven of Big Burnie Island, the biggest island in the region. The nations of Sovereign Shores and Nastiabach must use their navies to police the island chain, however the pirates are savvy in their methods and almost always avoid the law.
GEOGRAPHY
The Splintered Coast is the sea and island chain between Torvala and the Dreadlands. Few venture near the eastern shores, as many a frightening story are told about undead ghost ships taking sailors to the underworld. On its western side, the sea opens up into the vast ocean of Vathria. The Splintered Coast contains many archipelagos. In addition to ordinary islands formed by crustal movement, there are also lava islands formed by underwater volcanoes. The average depth of the sea is 1450 meters.
DEMOGRAPHIC
No official census data exists in the Splintered Coast as local governors rarely share information to other islands in the chain. While an outside observer may generally see mostly Humans inhabiting the area, the Splintered Coast is home to a multitude of races, included the Naga who live mostly in the deeper parts of the seafloor. There are several islands tribes of Trolls call home. These island Trolls differ from their mainland cousins in that their bodies are better suited to swimming and diving underwater for long periods of time.
RULING
All ships that sail the Splintered Coast adhere to the orders and will of the Captain, a person who commands their crew and expects them to follow orders. Mutinies are not unheard of and Captains have been killed or thrown overboard for failing to address crewmates' needs. In failed mutineer attempts, Captains may go to extreme lengths to punish troublemakers in an effort to discourage the crew to try similar actions in the future. A Captain's role on the sea is considered a lonesome one where they fear being challenged or stabbed in the back. Beyond the ship, many islands have local governors who oversee the day to day affairs of the towns and ports. Not all islands are inhabited and not all inhabitants are Humans who follow the law of the land. Local governors are oftentimes paid for and put into place by governments of other nations, namely Nastiabach and the Sovereign Shores. Governors will often pay a tribute tax to the Pirate King. An unofficial title, the Pirate King does not control the territory of Splintered coast, as most mainland nations consider it a wild contested zone. The Pirate King cares not for the lives of ordinary citizens of the region or the development of society. They monitor the actions and efforts of ships and Captains, ensuring loyalty by cannon fire. The Pirate King takes a cut of the plunder, and will root out Captains and crews who attempt to hide their treasure before paying their tribute.

MAIN BELIEFS
Freedom is the religion of the people of Splintered Coast. The acceptance that generally anything goes allows the common people of the island chains to live a carefree, albeit dangerous, life. There are many who worship sea gods and deities that they swear live in the depths below, though others balk at such claims. Organizations such as the Kings Church and the Sunseer Sect have sent missionaries into the region over the years. While there are some footholds made with these religions, most often times the missionaries have been sent back hogtied or drowned in the ocean they attempted to cross.
CLIMATE
Wedged between two large areas of mainland, the Splintered Coast has a celebrated microclimate dissimilar to the other regions of Vathria. Its winds and rains make it far cooler and humid than Torvala to the south and warmer than the northern kingdoms. The archipelago has a subtropical climate with two distinct seasons: a hot, wet summer and a warm but drier winter season.
