INTRODUCTION
The Sentinels are the military organization and arm of the crown to provide the Kings justice in the Sovereign Shores. They have varying branches of services acting both as army and local security police. The armed forces of the Sentinels cover the main land army that operates both within Sovereign Shores and previously as a fighting force against other kingdoms in Vathria. Additionally the royal navy of the King is built up by naval Sentinel soldiers. Lastly the security police act in a different manner to the armed forces or the Royal Guard, they duty is to handle to day to day security of the towns and cities of the kingdom, ensuring peace in the population and solving crime. To be a member of the Sentinels is to bring pride to one's family, a soldier fighting for their country. The security police however do not achieve quite the same reputation as many consider them to be utterly corrupt, allowing crime to happen as long as they are paid as opposed to making arrests. The corruption in many a common person's opinion has burrowed so deep within the security police that rot can never be removed.
CHARACTERISTICS
Sovereign Security
The police force of the Sentinels within the Sovereign Shores are perhaps the most controversial. Throughout the years, corruption has run rampant throughout the order as well as many miscarriages of justice that the common folk often feel target them and not the higher members of society. On the surface, crime is down and arrests are made both in and out of the cities. It is the apparent abuse of power however that never finds its way onto the reports. While the laws on paper are clear for all to see and the penalties of which known to the people of the land, for many crimes and infractions, the lower classes are punished more severely or imprisoned. It is more common for citizens of the higher classes often receive only light reprimands, sometimes accompanied by fines, with little inconvenience. Quite often their crimes are absolved entirely or ignored with no investigations or charges made. The courts of the Sovereign Shores are another arm of the constabulary, where older members of the police security forces use their years and experience in the service to bring justice to the people. This process however can be slow as the trials may sometimes take long periods of time due to security force judges pouring over the relevant legal documents and laws looking for accurate and appropriate sentencing measures. It is within the courts that the people believe they have a fairer chance of seeing true justice as cases tend to be more public than stand Sentinel security force investigations. Generally the issues with the local police security forces of the Sentinels has created serious tensions in the region, where the upper class undermines the integrity of the law by circumventing it, and the lower classes reject its enforcers because they feel the system is deeply unfair.
For years Kings and Queens of the realm has attempted to clean up the Sentinels but to most this is considered a lost cause. Crime can never be stopped and corruption is endemic to those with a cudgel.
The Path of Kings
Throughout the centuries in the Sovereign Shores, it has been commonplace the future Kings and Queens to train in their youth with the armed forces of the Sentinels. Some opt for the army, while others have spent time with the naval service. It is considered a rite of passage within the royal family to help them understand their lands better and spend time with their common man. It is the expectation that by understanding the Sentinels and what they do, no ruler of the land will ever put them into battle unnecessarily. War at times however is inevitable and historically there have been future Kings and even Queens who have died on the battlefields of Vathria before ever taking the crown. Their names are remembered always and songs frequently sung about them in the tavern halls and drinking parlors frequented by Sentinel soldiers. The Champion Arthur Brightborn trained with the Sentinels in his youth using his time within the order to maintain peace and order. His name has since been removed from Sentinel registers following the allegations of his crimes against the realm.
HISTORY
Age of Invasion
Aldren Brightborn stood tall with an impossible sword and thrust it deep within the portal that provided the demons with access to the world. People of Vathria tell this story to their children at bedtime, recounting the bravery and sacrifice of the first true King of the Prosperous Shore nation. The children rarely hear the individual stories of sacrifice of the thousands of men and women who fought side by side with Aldren during the demonic invasions. It is the Sentinels of the Current Age who remember them, singing to the long dead heroes who fought with every breath they had to fight back the evil plague of death that spread from those gates. They may not have had the Sentinel name during the Age of Invasion but almost all would consider them to be the first Sentinel soldiers of the lands.
Age of New Kingdoms
A great peace and era of prosperity came Prosperous Shores at the end of the demonic invasions. The Brightborn family were ushered in as the Kings and Queens of the land with their Sentinel army as their sword and shield. Queen Larissa Brightborn helped the Sentinels build a powerful navy following the discovery of a technological marvel, a Goblin ship that had run aground following a particularly terrible storm. The vessel was far different from any she had seen on her coastline and ordered the surviving Goblins to work for her and share their secrets of ship building. House Brightborn quickly split the Sentinel forces in three; a land based armed forces, a security force within the kingdom to police the nation and a new navy with the capabilities to dominate the other nations at sea warfare.
Time would pass and new Brightborn's would ascend the throne or pass of old age. Since the time of Queen Larissa, the Prosperous Shores had gained power and control of most of the other nations with the Sentinels as the vanguard. The lands were becoming united under one monarch though not every nation wanted a Brightborn as their ruler. Thellen Brightborn, King of the land used his nation's superior technologies to unite the entire continent, declaring war on the realm of Nastiabach. The war last years but ultimately the Sentinels were successful, Thellen ruled the Vathrian continent with his power stemming from the might of the Sentinels of his newly renamed Sovereign Shores.
The Current Age
Since the unification of Vathria the Sentinel armed forces have found fewer and fewer reasons to fight. The Navy still stops pirates but true combat is rare. As such, the army are often used as a ceremonial tool for the Brightborn family when preparing the young for the later complexities of ruling the nation. The security police force have become stagnant and fat over the years, comfortably living with corruption and worse to ensure their pockets are lined with gold to pay for their women and ale. It is a problem fueled by the inaction of current ruler of the land King Abellon Brightborn. His son Arthur has been expelled from the Sentinels following an apparent attempted assassination plot against his own brother, and has since fled the nation and is being actively pursued by Sentinel armed forces.
The Ages yet to come
The histories of tomorrow are awaiting an author, one who would tell the stories of the heroes and events not yet known. The Sentinels have a long proud history of service for their King and realm, though these days many of them have fallen to corruption. There are still those inside the force that wish for the Sentinels to remain a beacon of light in times of darkness. However for now, those stories are unwritten and the outcomes unknown as the looming threat grows larger across Vathria. . .
