INTRODUCTION
The King's Church a militant religious order of the Sovereign Shores, where believers worship the Holy Light. It is one of the dominant religions across Vathria as military conquest during the time of Thellen Brightborn allowed for Holy Light missionaries to march alongside the Sentinel armies to convert the nations. The main church, the Cathedral of Light can be found gleaming white and standing tall in Bay Crest, one of the tallest buildings in the city and nation, eclipsed only by the royal palace itself. Founded centuries before in what was then the Prosperous Shores, believers pledged their souls to the Holy Light and the Angels that served the Gods. Their goal is the same as any militant religious group in that they wish to convert the world to the teaching of the Holy Light and drive out blasphemy.
CHARACTERISTICS
A Church unlike Any Other
The church is handsomely supported by the taxes of the people and generous donations from the Royal palace. The King's Church has always supported the ruling House Brightborn of Sovereign Shores, if only for their patronage and devout belief in the cause of the church. While the direct line of Kings and Queens remains unbroken in the Brightborn family, it has been commonplace over time for members of the Brightborn name, but less connected to the duties of the royal family, to pledge themselves to the Holy Light and commit to the teachings and practices to spread the religion. These missionaries and priests vow to never have children and remain pure in life so as to focus only on their mission of the Holy Light itself. Across the Sovereign Shores, belief in the church and its teachings is a part of everyday life, while there are many who devoutly belief and base their lives on the teachings, there are many others still who just live their lives without interference from the church. In Bay Crest, the great Cathedral of Light is one of the most famous buildings across all of Vathria, and many travelers and pilgrims will make their way to the city just to marvel at the incredible white stone structure. The Holy Light is a part of education as much as it is a part of life, as children are indoctrinated early at schools taught by the priests. Many private academies for the wealthier citizens of the nation will pay the church directly to educate their children in the correct way of the world. The King's Church believes that young minds will take the teachings of the Holy Light and spread them to the world, educating and bring new believers to the true path of belief.
HISTORY
Age of Creation
Legitimate historical texts of the first age have not survived the passage of time, therefore much of the history of this period is myth, legend, or bedtime stories mothers pass on to their children. The King's Church however believes fundamentally that it was in this age that the Gods descended from the skies and gave life to the continent of Vathria and the surrounding world. The Gods came with armies of angels to do their bidding and make their Gods will absolute.
War of the Seven Gods
Texts of the Holy Light tell of a great war where the God Mazaroth betrayed and killed fellow Gods and they sought to stop him, to seal Mazaroth before he could plunge the world into an eternal darkness of his making. Angels battled in the sky and on land the fires raged. A fraction of a fraction survived so say the sacred texts, they were deemed worthy.
Age of Invasion
Aldren, Human Champion of the Demonic invasion plunged a holy sword into the heart of the demon gate closing the portal off and bring light back to the world. People looked to Aldren and his accomplishments as something only the Gods themselves could have ordained and soon some would begin to capitalize on it. The religion of the Holy Light had existed in one form or another for millennia, a central belief of gods and the angels above them. What this belief needed was a man, a figure they could look to with achievements that could only be possible through the Gods blessing. The Kings Church was born in earnest as the final demons were hunted down and the age came to an end.
Age of New Kingdoms
This era of Vathrian history was one of great peace and bounty for many, but incredible hardship for others. As Thellen waged war through the nations to unify them under his name, the sentinel armies were not alone. They marched with missionaries of the Kings Church on a quest to unify the world under Thellen and the Holy Light. Where they stepped, they converted and those who refused to see the light were executed or tortured. This holy crusade lasted countless months and the church would consider their efforts a resounding victory officially. Behind the closed doors of the Kings Church however, conversations and debates were held to discuss the lands that held out, the parts of the world Thellen's Sentinels had not been sent to, places Thellen himself would not go to. There were places that had accepted Brightborn as King without even needing the King himself to be present. It was in these lands that the Church struggled to bring the message of the Holy Light. The lands of beasts, Elves and worse. The order had a problem that they could not solve.
The Dreadlands
During the Age of Freedom, a cataclysmic event happened in the nation of Sollovast. A moment so dreadful that everything in the land died. This magical attack left the nation destroyed and changed as a fraction of a fraction of the dead rose up as a new people, the Undead who declared the home Sollovast no more. The land became known by all as the Dreadlands and few dared to enter. In the Age of New Kingdoms however as Thellen declared himself the King of Vathria, The Kings Church considered how to convert the Undead of the Dreadlands, or if they even wanted to try. Many considered the undead to be unholy, almost as bad as the Demons that invaded the land in the previous age. Many priests of the King's Church refused to entertain the notion but some held faith that giving the undead the chance at the redemption of the Holy Light was the right thing to do. A mission was proposed, secretly with the blessing of Thellen, the missionaries would be sent to the Dreadlands along with a detachment of Sentinel soldiers for protection. In the early days many ventured into the Dreadlands to offer aid or to somehow turn the event of Sollovast's end into their favor and profit. Few people ever returned and those who did, were never quite the same again. Of the detachment of forty missionaries and Sentinels that entered the land, only one returned with a message. The priest never spoke again but his message etched on parchment in blood remains hidden in the depths of the great Cathedral vaults ‘We worship none but the Queen'.
Torvala
Religion in Torvala spread across the land in much the same way as it had in the Sovereign Shores. The Kings Church however took issue that not only was it not the Holy Light that Torvalans believed, but that it was also a religion born from the mouths of the Dragonkin. The Dragonkin were steadfast in their resolve to push their religion of Sun worship on to the humans of Torvala which made the priests of the King's Church sick. It was blasphemy, it was sacrilegious, but there was little that could be done towards it. Time passed and the Kings Church watched as humans became subjugated by the Dragonkin, educated by the teachings of Sun worship and pressured into accepting the Sun Priest as a vessel of the Sun on the land. Priests repeatedly approached the Kings and Queens of Sovereign Shores to take action and each time were told no. As Thellen had unified Vathria in blood, unity forever more would be held in peace. It was for other nations to handle their own internal affairs and for now the Kings Church were powerless.
The Current Age
As the year's progress and the world changes the methods and motives of the Kings Church remain largely the same for the masses. Prayer and devotion, with hearty acceptance of generous donation. For many the Church is no different from the tax collector. Though for others, it is more than just a belief, it is a source of strength and power. Long before the church decided never to leave fate to the Sentinels to protect them, they instead began to train their own heroes, the mighty Paladins. The Champion Roruk is one such Paladin raised by his mentor, the Priest Lius. Roruk believed every teaching of the order until the day he found Lius his mentor and guide in the way of the Holy Light had betrayed the order to achieve his own ambitions forcing Roruk to lose faith. When the leader of the order the secret machinations and plots of various priests and archbishops force Roruk to question everything and leave the Kings Church with a new mission.
To this day the main objective is to spread the Holy Light to all the lands of Vathria and have nations pledge their allegiance to their own god, as they believe that if their god has influence on the people of all regions, it will empower the people, lands and monarchy of the Sovereign Shores. The order believe that this soft power will make them essential for any future King or Queen of the land and ensure the Kings Church remains an integral part of society for all time.
The Ages yet to come
The histories of tomorrow are awaiting an author, one who would tell the stories of the heroes and events not yet known. The Kings Churches power has waxed and waned over the centuries but their central belief has never faltered. They aim to spread their teachings throughout all of Vathria despite many refusing to accept what they preach. However for now, those stories are unwritten and the outcomes unknown as the looming threat grows larger across Vathria. . .
